Hey guys!

Well, as the title says, I am very new to climbing/caving. I moved back to San Antonio about a year ago after 7 years in New York City and before that, 5 years in Chicago. Awesome cities.

My alma mater here in SAT, St. Mary's University, has a climbing wall with classes that I will be enrolling in. Well, was curious and please excuse me for my ignorance on the subject matter. I wanted to know if there are any places here in San Antonio that sell climbing equipment- climbing helmets, harnesses, climbing/caving books etc. I know Austin has a quite a few places but can't seem to find any in San Antonio. I would appreciate any input. I know Whole Earth at the Quarry has some stuff but they don't have everything. I guess if need be, I could drive to Austin for that. But was curious if any existed here. Would appreciate any feedback, advice, comments, questions, jokes... :)

Well I hope everyone has a wonderful day and thanks to all who respond. :)

Welcome to Texas! You should join the facebook group "San Antonio Rock Climbers". They're very active organizing outings at SA areas and beyond.

Some of the gear stores seem to be decreasing their gear inventory compared to the past.

You can see my guidebook at Whole Earth Provision in SA, and buy it there or on-line (free shipping) at www.AustinClimbingBook.com.

Hi Anna, welcome. Besides Whole Earth I think Good Sports in SA has some stuff. But you might be better off ordering from places like Backcountry, Mountaingear, or REI. They all have great return policies. For example, you can order as many shoes as you want to try on from Backcountry and return them all or whatever you don't want to keep. They start the process of refunding your credit card or Paypay as soon as UPS scans the label. You won't find much selection in SA unfortunately.

Thanks, John for the tip! I appreciate it. Yeah that is what they tell me. I plan to make a trip to Whole Earth. I will definitely look for your book. :) Thank you again!

Thank you! And thank you for the info. I will make a trip to Good Sports to check out their gear. I've been reading a lot of decent reviews about BAckcountry and REI. Sounds pretty good. Though I didn't know that you could do that with the shoes. Very cool. I reckon I will have to travel to Austin if I want to try on helmets, shoes, etc aside from Backcountry. No biggie. Its a great excuse to make the small trip up there. Well thank you again for the info and have a great day. :)

Welcome Anna! I started climbing in San Antonio about six months ago, it has been great. There are some great places in the city, and several areas within 2 hours that are amazing. REI is putting in a store right now in Huebner oaks, it should be done in a month or two. I like REi because of the dividends. Good sports and whole earth are the only other retailers, the former being a little pricey. San Antonio rock climbers group on facebook is a must! See ya round!

Hi Dylan! Thanks for the welcome. :)

Yeah I read that REI is opening a store here in SAT in September sometime. I also found out like you said that Good Sports and Whole Earth are the only places here in SAT which is such a shame for those of interested. I haven't been to Good Sports yet but do they sell helmets in-store? I know they have em on their website but wasn't sure if they also had em in-store. I recently deactivated my FB account. LOL. I grew quite tired of it. But was thinking about beginning another account just for the climbing and I also belong to SAAA here in SAT. I think I may have to do that.

Thanks again for the heads up! See ya!
